The case certainly isn't mandatory, but the Pi 3 can run quite hot thanks to the BCM2837 system-on-chip it uses. So a case with cooling could be a wise investment, and as spotted by FanlessTech, that's exactly what Akasa is offering with its new Pi Aluminum Case. The case is compatible with all versions of the Raspberry Pi Model B, but also the Asus Tinker Board. It offers full input/output support as well as having openings designed for GPIO, camera, and display connectors. There's also support for fitting an external antenna to allow a stronger Wi-Fi connection.
